Import Requirements

Create requirements from a third-party tool or restore your data using imports.

One of the most important things about software is how you can get information in and out of it. TestMonitor makes it easy for you to import requirements from a third-party tool or restore requirements from a backup export.

Before You Begin

Make sure your project has the requirement feature enabled.

Preparing your Import File

You can import requirements from two different file types: CSV or Excel. Both file types will need the three basic import fields of Name, Description and Type.

Import fields have certain specifications:

  • Name: This field requires a value and has a 100 character maximum.
  • Description: This field is optional.
  • Type: This field requires a value, the value must match one of the requirement types created for your project.

 Import files cannot exceed 5MB

Below is an example of a CSV import file and you can also view our sample Excel file.

"Name","Description","Type"
"Purchasing process","The system should facilitate our purchasing process","Business"
"Password Recovery","","Functional"

Not all of the fields available when creating a requirement can be imported. The Code field is generated within the system and Tags cannot be imported, though they can be batch added to requirements with multi-select.

Running the Import Wizard

Requirements-import

Once you have prepared your import file it’s time to upload the information into your TestMonitor account. To run the import wizard follow the steps below:

Upload File

  1. Click on Define in the navigation menu and select Requirements from the submenu (which is the default).
  2. Click the three dots in the top right corner of the requirements page and choose Import…
  3. Drag and drop, or click to select your import file. Click Mapping in the bottom right to access the next step.

Map Columns

  1. Click the dropdown Map Column… and select the field from your file you want imported. Check if the preview shows the right data.
  2. Click Next to map the next column. If you don’t want to import an optional field, you can choose Skip. If you have defined any custom fields, they will be listed here as well. Continue to map every column from your import file.
  3. Choose Confirm in the bottom right when finished mapping all file columns.

Confirm

  1. Click Finish in the bottom right to import all of the mapped file information.
  2. You will receive a notification alert and an email when your import has completed!

If there is an import problem the notification email will contain details about the problem including the row number of the problem and the reason for the error.

Revert a Requirement Import

Sometimes the wrong information is imported into a system and you need an easy way to remove the incorrect data.

You can only revert a requirements import if there are no test cases assigned to the imported requirements.

To revert an import:

  1. Click the Settings icon in the top right navigation.
  2. Select Imports & Exports in the left menu.
  3. Click the Imports submenu (which is the default).
  4. Locate the import you wish to undo and click the Revert icon on the right.

Once you select to revert an import, this cannot be undone. The import process will have to be started again to return that data to the system.
